How to Add Effects to Drums on iPhone and iPad

Last updated October 17, 2026

How do you add effects to drums in an iOS music app?

Open the effects or FX section for the drum track, then work in this order: EQ to clean up the low end, compression for punch, saturation or bit crushing for character, and reverb or delay last for space. Use effects lightly at first. A drum loop with a small amount of each almost always sounds better than one with a lot of a single effect.

What You Need

  • An iPhone or iPad with a drum machine or groovebox app that has effects on drum tracks
  • A drum loop that already plays the pattern you want
  • Headphones, since phone speakers hide low end and reverb tails

Step 1: Tune and Balance the Pads First

Effects can't fix a kit that's out of balance. Before adding anything, set each pad's level so the kick and snare lead and the hats sit underneath. Tune the kick and snare down a semitone or two if they sound thin, or up if they sound muddy against your bassline.

Step 2: EQ Out the Mud

Use EQ to cut before you boost. If the loop sounds boomy, lower the low band a little. If it sounds harsh, ease off the highs. A small low-mid cut often makes drums sound tighter without touching the kick's weight. If your bass and kick clash, cutting some low end from one of them helps more than turning either down.

Step 3: Compress for Punch

A compressor evens out levels and adds punch. Start with a moderate setting and listen to the snare: if it gets louder and snappier, it's working. If the loop starts pumping or sounding flat, back it off. A gate cuts off the tail of each hit, which helps when you want tight, dry, 80s-style drums.

Step 4: Add Character

This is where drums get a style:

Pick one or two. Stacking every color effect at once usually turns the loop to mush.

Step 5: Add Space with Reverb and Delay

Reverb puts the drums in a room. A short reverb makes a dry kit sound natural; a long one pushes it into the background. A tempo-synced delay on drums works best in small amounts or on a separate track with only the snare or a percussion part, so echoes don't blur the kick.

Step 6: Split Parts onto Two Tracks for More Control

If your app allows more than one drum track, put the kick and snare on one track and hats or percussion on another. Now you can add reverb to the percussion without washing out the kick, or distort the kick without crunching the hats. Some apps let each drum track run its own kit, so you can layer a clean 909 kick under a lo-fi snare.

Tips

  • Toggle each effect on and off while the loop plays. If you can't hear the difference, take it out
  • Check the loop at low volume. Good drum processing still sounds punchy quietly
  • Save a dry copy of the loop before heavy processing so you can compare

Adding Effects to Drums in ARC-24

In ARC-24, any of the eight tracks can be a drum track, and every drum track has the same full effects chain as a synth or sample track. Open it from FX in the extras row while in Drums mode, or from Mixer → FX on the drum track's strip.

The rack includes a resonant filter, compressor and gate, distortion, bit crusher, ring mod, flanger, a tempo-synced delay (digital, analog, or tape), tone reverb, and Atmosphere, a reverb with chorus and tape wow. Character adds texture, air, width, and warmth. Each strip also has a 3-band EQ. Per-pad volume, pan, and pitch (±12 semitones) are under Pads, next to the kit pill above the grid.

Effects save with each loop, so a breakdown loop can have filtered, reverb-heavy drums while the main loop stays dry. Each drum track picks its own kit from the ten included. See Drum sound design. Pricing is a 7-day free trial, then a one-time unlock ($9.99 USD on the US App Store, varies by region).

FAQ

What effects make drums sound punchier?

EQ to remove muddy low-mids, then a compressor to bring up the attack of each hit. A little saturation adds loudness and weight on top.

Should I put reverb on drums?

Usually a little. A short reverb makes app drums sound less dry and more natural. Keep it light on the kick, or use it on a separate percussion track.

How do I make lo-fi drums on iPhone?

Use a lo-fi kit if your app has one, then add a bit crusher or saturation, roll off the highs with a low-pass filter, and add some swing to the timing.

What order should drum effects go in?

A common order is EQ, compression, saturation or other color effects, then reverb and delay. Apps often fix the order internally, so focus on the amount of each effect.

Can I add different effects to the kick and snare separately?

Yes, if your app supports more than one drum track. Put the kick and snare on separate tracks, each with its own effects.
